"The Elfin Knight"
Ballads & Dances from Renaissance England
Artists:
Joel Frederiksen, b.
Ensemble Phoenix Munich
Telling stories in song – this is the vocation of Joel Frederiksen, a deep bass with an exceptional timbre. Accompanying himself on the lute or surrounded by his own ensemble based in Munich, this extraordinary musician invites us to discover popular ballads belonging to both English and American traditions. He transcends his scrupulous musical and historical research to bring back to vivid life a whole forgotten world, sometimes redolent of the age of chivalry, sometimes firmly rooted in everyday reality. A spellbinding experience!

"Birds on fire" Jewish Music for Viols |
Fretwork | Stock Code: cd0007a
 |
The programme presented by Fretwork illustrates the genuinely cosmopolitan atmosphere that sustained musical creation at the Tudor and Stuart courts, which did not hesitate to draw on the sources of Franco-Flemish or Italian music. Although the Jews had been banished from the kingdom of England since 1290, the Italian-Jewish Bassano and Lupo families became veritable compositional dynasties, dominating music at court for the best part of a century between 1550 and 1650. Birds on Fire, by the British composer Orlando Gough, adds a contemporary echo inspired by klezmer music.

Elizabeth I |
The Elizabethan Consort | Stock Code: cd 0305
 |
Elizabeth I's court was a great place to be a musician, and opportunities to make music were all around, whether for use in religious services, or for pleasurable moments during entertainment and relaxation. William Byrd was the queen's particular musical favourite, but this did not exclude others such as Morley or Allison from getting a hearing. This album concentrates on the secular rather than the sacred, and, from music in praise of the Queen, and of England, to dance tunes and songs, it presents a selection of many of the types of music which a courtier in late sixteenth century London would have heard and known.

The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book - 2CD set |
Martin Souter | Stock Code: cd 0304
 |
The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge houses one of the world's most important manuscripts of keyboard music. It consists of a small folio volume of 220 leaves of paper, 209 of which are filled with music, which is written on six line staves ruled by hand. Our more familiar modern notation uses five line staves. The beautiful binding is of crimson morocco, with gold tooling. The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book was compiled between 1612 and 1619 by Francis Tregian during the time in which he was a prisoner in the Fleet prison in London. This wealthy, artistic and cultured man had been imprisoned, along with many others, by King James I of England, who had resumed a campaign of persecution of Catholics which the English royal family had been waging intermittently since the days of Henry VIII almost a century earlier. The Tregian family remained true to their faith, even in the face of great adversity.

Madrigals for a Tudor King |
Phiippe Verdelot: | Stock Code: cd 0300
 |
| Philippe Verdelot was the most important composer of Italian madrigals in the early 16th century and recognized as the greatest innovator of the genre. A Frenchman, he occupied several important musical posts in Italy, including the Florentine posts of maestro di cappella at the Baptistry of S. Maria del Fiore and the great Duomo itself. In the mid 1520s, during his time in Florence, a set of part-books were assembled, probably under Verdelot's supervision, for the court of Henry VIII. Most, if not all, of the works were composed by Verdelot. This is the first recording of the complete madrigals in the collection, which stands not only as the most exceptional of diplomatic musical gifts but is also an important source for the history of the early madrigals. |
