Traditional Songs
The Sprig of Thyme offers a selection of traditional songs of the British Isles, drawing together long-standing favourites as the Willow song and The Miller of Dee with lesser known gems as O can ye sew cushions and The Sprig of Thyme. Many new settings for choir and small instrumental group have been created by John Rutter especially for this album. Rutter's suite of eleven traditional songs, The Sprig of Thyme (all of which can be heard on this album) is published by Oxford University Press.
"This is a lovely disc, one to head my list of Christmas presents for musical friends." Gramophone

Wolcum Yule
Celtic and British Songs and Carols
Artists:
Anonymous 4
Andrew Lawrence-King
Andrew Lawrence-King's virtuoso harp joins the voices of Anonymous 4 in a wealth of Yuletide music, favourite and rare, from the British Isles. Juxtaposing pagan and Christian traditions, the programme interweaves English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh ballads and carols with well-loved pieces by John Tavener (The Lamb), Benjamin Britten, and a newly commissioned work by Peter Maxwell Davies. Andrew Lawrence-King adds special colour playing a variety of instruments: psaltery, Baroque harp, and a remarkable Irish “Queen Mary” harp which sounds as if it contains its own peal of heavenly bells.

An exuberant instrumental trio with roots in medieval and traditional folk. Drawing influence from English, French medieval and European folk styles Horses Brawl explore unconventional techniques on modern and ancient instruments to create an intense and original style.
Horses Brawl have been hailed as one of the brightest young bands around.
Horses Brawl formed in 2003 for a Creative Arts East tour to perform formal Elizabethan dance music, but very quickly they discovered their own rich new sound, which incorporates semi-improvised arrangements of early and folk music from Eastern and Western Europe. The trio explore unconventional techniques on their instruments producing a fascinating sound that has been described as: ‘Vibrant, engaging and completely spell-binding' (Steafan Hannigan) and, ‘An Early music group to keep an eye on' (Verity Sharp BBC Radio 3). |
