| This instrument is based upon one of two complete three-finger-hole medieval bone flutes or whistles
from Gloucester. It was found in 1989 during archaeological excavations of medieval building remains in Southgate Street near to Gloucester Docks. Made from the hollow wing bone of a goose, but missing the block or fipple, it has a semi-circular opening at one end forming the whistle mouthpiece, and at the opposite end are three roughly circular finger holes. Previous studies of bone flutes from the prehistoric to medieval period have shown a prevalence of flutes with three finger holes. This is thought to be the optimum number that can be played when holding the instrument with one hand, and may suggest that this is the origin of the pipe and tabor (one-man pipe and drum combination). Further examples of these medieval bone flutes have been found on various archaeological excavations throughout Britain, with the most common material being sheep or lamb bone. Replica Sheep Shank Flutes Made by archaeologist Richard Sermon these medieval style three-hole bone flutes come with a bees wax fipple, and are capable of playing a six note Aeolian (Minor) scale: |
