The collection of medieval Latin and Middle High German poems and songs known as Carmina Burana takes its name from the monastery of Benediktbeuren in Upper Bavaria, preserved in a manuscript that dates, it is thought, from about 1230, with additions from later in the century. The collection was probably compiled not at Benediktbeuren but by at least three different scribes either in Seckau (Styria) or in Carinthia. The manuscript was taken from the Abbey in 1803 and deposited in Munich (Codex Latinus Monacensis clm 4660/4660a), to be edited and published under its present title in 1847 by the Munich librarian Johann Andreas Schmeller. Some parts of the manuscript are damaged and rearranged. The miniature of the wheel of fortune, for example, was later used as a frontispiece. With the few poems in Middle High German most of the texts of Carmina Burana are in Latin. |

| The Llibre Vermeil contained 172 double pages (folio size), of which 35 have been lost. The purpose of the music is explained in instructions before the first song: “Since the pilgrims who come to Montserrat often want to sing and dance, and that during their night vigil in the church as by day in the church square, where only orderly and pious songs are allowed, a number of suitable songs have been written, to meet that need. These should be used with due consideration, without disturbing those who wish to continue their prayers and religious meditation.” Then pilgrims are again admonished to refrain also on their way home from frivolous songs and evil dances.
A very enjoyable mix of styles of songs, lively and reflective, very secular in style. |

Performed by Peter Horn who also built the instrument this is an interpretation of what the Herpe would have sounded like with early English folk songs and readings of Saxon poetry in both Old English and modern translation The Saxon Lyre or Hearpa, Hearpe or harpa is an instrument unique to a people and time. Indeed we are one of the few who make them now. A number of them have been found, typically made from a single piece of wood and rarely exceeding 25 mm in thickness these instruments are those used by the traveling bard or in the Saxon Home Although short (37mins) this cd is not only enjoyable and evocative but an unusual addition to any collection of early music. |
