Mediaeval instrument, member of the flute family, made from the horn of European or African cattle. Due to the wide inner cone its tone resembles that of an ocarina.
A slightly larger instrument than the soprano, this has an soft mellow tone. The Cip Gemshorns have a fipple carved out of the shape of the horn and the block for ease of playing The block itself is made from moisture resistant cedar.
Each instrument is individually made and tuned. The block is made of water resistant cedar. A full consort of instruments are available from sopranino to sub bass but availability is limited. Please ask for further details

The construction of this instrument is inspired by preserved period instruments of the 16th century. The range of the instrument is 1 and 1/2 (partially chromatic) octaves. Material: maple, stained to a rich dark colour with a fine finish.

These instruments are made with a wide bore, a louder sound, and a cane double reed (Arundo donax).

Reconstruction of an extinct woodwind instrument, which could be found in the cabinet of instruments as late as the 17th century, as is testified by many iconographic and literary sources.

The instrument has a reed-cap, which at the same time serves as an air reservoir, allowing a so-called continuous tone during playing. Instead of using the original material - a tanned pig's bladder - this is manufactured in fine leather. The instrument is furnished with a single beating reed and it has a diatonic scale in the range of a ninth.

Based on the hummelchen smallpipes found in drawings by Praetorius, these early smallpipes are easy to play. The parallel bored chanter plays in the key of D, while the two drones play in D and A. They have a muted tone entirely suitable for both indoor use or use with other instruments.

Cornamuse- Loriman Pipe | Stock Code: bmww011

The Loriman pipe is a Renaissance alto windcap instrument designed and produced in our own Early Music Shop Workshop. It is pitched in f, made from rosewood. Played via a slit mouthpiece forming the reed cap.
It has a straight parallel bore and has a range and sound very similar to the crumhorn. It is a useful instrument for both folk and early music. Each instrument is tuned individually by our workshop technician and uses our unique plastic double reed
