Handel: Dixit Dominus
Steffani: Stabat Mater
The Sixteen adds to its stunning Handel collection with a brand new recording of Dixit Dominus set alongside a little know treasure - Agostino Steffani's Stabat Mater.
Full of virtuosity, vibrant colour and dynamic energy, Handel's Dixit Dominus captures absolutely the Italian style of the period. Handel's control of forces is masterly and the range of texture and style is breathtaking. Written during the composer's time in Italy in the early eighteenth century it is amongst his first autographed works and also one of his finest.
By comparison Agostino Steffani's little known Stabat Mater was one of his last compositions. Written for the Academy of Vocal Music in London, this work is the most powerful expression of Steffani's religious fervour and, outside opera, his largest, most varied and most heartfelt composition.

"Vespro della beata Vergine" |
Cantus Cölln Concerto Palatino Konrad Junghänel, | Stock Code: bmcd014
 |
Rome in the eighteenth century: this reconstruction of Marian Vespers – five psalms, a Magnificat and their brief antiphons – is drawn from the works of the maestro di cappella of St Peter's, Virgilio Mazzocchi, and his close colleagues Carissimi and Frescobaldi. Anything but austere, this music is a worthy successor to that of the great Palestrina.

SCHÜTZ. Musikalische Exequien A German Funeral Ma |
La Chapelle Royale Philippe Herreweghe, dir. / co | Stock Code: bmcd013
 |
Commissioned for the funeral of a prince, this German ‘burial music' deals with subjects that lie at the heart of Schütz's output: the misery of earthly life and the promise of the hereafter. In a mood of searing intensity, the music arranges texts from Scripture to form a veritable ‘funeral mass'.

SCARLATTI. Bella madre dei fiori Cantatas |
SCARLATTI. Bella madre dei fiori Cantatas | Stock Code: bmcd010
 |
Whether it be in Palermo, where Alessandro Scarlatti was born, or in Rome, where he worked as a composer, the chamber cantata was inextricably linked with the aristocratic salons of the Italian peninsula in the 1680s and 1690s. These pieces, resolutely pastoral in tone, are set in the green landscapes of the Mediterranean basin, which vibrate to the laments of the turtle-dove and the murmur of springs. All nature is invited to share the grief of lovers: Cloris weeps for Fileno, Orpheus for Eurydice, whilst the gods, the spirits, the stars are omnipresent. Scarlatti was the ideal composer to paint this enchanted realm in music.

Venice, 1625: the city of the doges is one of the principal artistic centres of Europe. At the Cappella San Marco, a profoundly original style of instrumental music is in the process of discarding all reference to the tradition of vocal polyphony. The era of Baroque stravaganze has begun! Now, in the hands of a supreme master of the recorder, this ultra-virtuosic art acquires a new lease of life.

HANDEL. 12 Solo Sonatas op.1 |
Academy of Ancient Music Richard Egarr | Stock Code: bmcd007
 |
With its varied scoring and its exploration of instrumental combinations sometimes reminiscent of the Brandenburg Concertos, this set of 12 sonatas has nothing of an opus 1 about it, whatever the title page says! On the contrary, it is the work of a mature Handel in full command of his compositional resources.

MONTEVERDI. Il Ballo delle Ingrate Sestina |
Les Arts Florissants William Christie, dir. | Stock Code: bmcd006
 |
To celebrate his son's wedding in 1608, the Duke of Mantua organised a series of musical entertainments, including Il ballo delle ingrate. This court ballet, set to music by his maestro di cappella Claudio Monteverdi, employs the theatrical stile recitativo to bring out the poetry of the text. The unexpected death of the young singer who was to portray the Ingrate deeply affected the composer, who dedicated to her memory the Sestina also recorded here.
